Prosthetic Reconstruction of Partial and Complete Edentulism with Overdentures

Abstract

Replacement of missing teeth is a fundamental aspect of oral rehabilitation, with significant functional and aesthetic implications. Despite improvements in oral health among middle-aged populations, the growing proportion of elderly individuals is projected to increase the demand for complete prosthetic rehabilitation, from 53.8 million in 1991 to 61 million in 2020. Advances in prosthetic dentistry have significantly improved treatment outcomes, particularly through the development of implant-supported prostheses.

Implant-based solutions enhance retention, stability, and masticatory efficiency compared to conventional dentures, while also contributing to alveolar bone preservation and patient satisfaction.

Modern prosthetic approaches include conventional removable dentures, fixed partial dentures, telescopic overdentures, and implant-supported overdentures. Telescopic systems allow preservation of remaining teeth, improve stability, and facilitate oral hygiene, whereas implant-supported overdentures offer advantages such as fewer required implants, lower costs, reduced surgical invasiveness, and improved esthetics. The introduction of CAD/CAM technologies has further advanced prosthetic rehabilitation by improving the precision, fit, and predictability of restorations, particularly in complex implant-supported cases.

Overall, the combination of modern prosthetic designs, implant technology, and digital workflows enables individualized, reliable, and functional rehabilitation of partially or completely edentulous patients, ensuring long-term oral health, patient satisfaction, and quality of life.
